  5. Choose your Change

Introduction

In this article, we’ll explore transformation vs continuous improvement and how each change method affects business success. In an ever-changing world, you have to choose your change! In today’s fast-paced business environment, companies must change continuously to stay competitive. This change can be implemented basically via two different methods: via transformation or via continuous improvement. Both methods can be applied successfully, but without choosing your change method deliberately, the likelihood of being successful is much lower. In this post, you will learn about the fundamental differences between these methods, what impact the selected method has on your change program, and how to make the right choice.

transformation vs continuous improvement

Transformation vs. Continuous Improvement

Both transformation and continuous improvement drive change, but they do so in different ways. Many companies default to one approach based on past habits rather than making an intentional decision. However, the choice between continuous improvement and transformation should be guided by the company’s long-term vision, culture, and strategic priorities.

Let’s first define these concepts:

Transformation:

  1. A transformation is a dramatic change in form or appearance. It’s an extreme, radical shift.
  2. A complete change in the appearance or character of something or someone, especially to improve it.

Continuous Improvement:

  1. Continuous improvement is the ongoing enhancement of products, services, or processes through incremental and breakthrough improvements. These efforts may seek “incremental” progress over time or “breakthrough” improvements all at once.
  2. An ongoing process of identifying, analyzing, and making incremental refinements to systems, processes, products, or services.

On first sight, both approaches don’t seem to be fundamentally different.

– Both focus on changing the status quo;

– Both can have a radical impact;

– Both can be implemented via smaller steps rather, and

– Both can deliver fast results or require more time before effects are noticeable.

Yet, there is a fundamental difference that makes it worthwhile to explicitly make a choice which change approach is best suited for the case at hand.

The fundamental difference

The key difference between these approaches lies in their time focus. To put it in black and white:

– Continuous improvements focus on the past: understanding past performance, analysing inefficiencies, and identifying opportunities for incremental refinements, whereas

– Transformations focus on the future: it starts with defining a vision of the future and continues with aligning the organization, processes, systems, and behaviors to achieve it.

The reason why this distinction is so important is that it has a huge impact on two key success factors of every change: resource selection and stakeholder motivation.

  1. Resource selection:
    1. Do you need more resources who understand the current situation in detail but remain open to improvements and are not too comfortable with the status quo?
    2. Or do you need thought leaders and visionaries who can inspire a future vision and bring an outside-in perspective based on best practices from other companies?
  2. Stakeholder motivation:
    1. Some stakeholders are motivated by fine-tuning organizations, processes, and systems, striving for perfection, even when increased complexity may outweigh the intended improvement

Other stakeholders are energized by a clear, compelling vision of a better future, especially when this future is both challenging and realistically achievable.

Choose your change!

Rather than defaulting to a single change approach, organizations should deliberately choose which change method best fits their current situation. Some key criteria to select the appropriate method are listed below.

Selection criteria Continuous Improvement Transformation
Time Focus Looks at past performance Focuses on a future vision
Change Approach Incremental & iterative Radical or step-by-step
Key resources Process optimizers & operational experts Visionary leaders & change agents
Stakeholder ambition Refining details & optimizing workflows Embracing bold, long-term change

Of course, there will be many other things to consider when choosing your change method, like to what extent it is beneficial to shake things up, fly under the radar, try something new, availability of resources, or budget.

Conclusion

Every organization must make critical decisions about how to evolve. The best businesses are those that balance optimization with bold transformation, ensuring that every step forward aligns with their vision. At The Independables, we help companies make these strategic decisions, guiding them through transformational change with the leadership and expertise needed to achieve long-term success.
